Three Things the new UK Government needs to do
The new UK government will have the responsibility of bringing our world back to life. The decisions that they make over the next few years will shape our future and the future of wildlife around the world.
By taking the right actions, they could create a stable and healthy world for generations to come and protect us from the worst of the climate and nature crisis.
Here are the three things that the new UK government must focus on.
Balancing nature, climate and people
Balancing nature, climate and people
The science is clear. Our planet only has a certain amount of resources, and we’re not the only ones who need them. Our land and seas produce our food, provide the air we breathe and the water we drink, as well as being home to the incredible species and landscapes that make our world so precious.
But the way our food is currently produced is a major factor in the loss of wildlife and wild spaces around the world. It's also responsible for a third of greenhouse gas emissions around the world – so the way our food is made is too often overlooked as a cause of the climate crisis. The new government must make sure that the way we use our land and seas actually reduces emissions, restores nature and helps build a strong and resilient food system here at home and around the world.
WWF is calling on all political parties to commit to a new piece of ground-breaking legislation: the Living Planet Act. This will make sure that any decisions on how our land and seas are used has to take into account the impact on nature and climate.
Supporting farmers and saving forests
Supporting farmers and saving forests
Farmers shouldn’t be shouldering the burden of moving towards climate and nature-friendly farming alone. The new government should:
- Support farmers to cut emissions and restore nature by putting power back in their hands and making our food system fair for everyone.
- Increase the UK farming budget in line with inflation.
- Set core environmental standards so food imported from other countries isn’t undercutting UK producers.
- Make sure products sold on UK shelves aren’t contributing to deforestation around the world.
Investing in climate and nature
Investing in climate and nature
Everyone knows that money is powerful. Investing in the right places can make a huge difference when it comes to tackling the climate and nature crisis. The new government can use its influence to make sure that the billions being invested are helping to bring our world back to life.
- Make it mandatory for businesses to have plans to reduce their impact on climate and nature.
- Build the world’s first financial centre that focuses on having a positive impact on climate and nature.
- Commit to making sure that taxpayer money and government spending is delivering energy security and a stable future, and not worsening the climate crisis.
Stop the destruction of nature
The new UK government will have a huge responsibility to stop the destruction of nature and tackle the climate crisis. We need your help if we’re going to make real change happen.
