Want a Living Planet? Let’s get our Act together.

Nature is our life support system, but right now it’s in trouble.

WWF has a unique solution that can help bring our world back to life. We’re urgently calling for a new law at Westminster, the Living Planet Act.

The Challenge

Extreme climate change and the destruction of nature are happening scarily fast. We’ve seen the average size of wildlife populations fall by a staggering 73% since 1970. And we’re not just talking about risks to wildlife. It’s about our own health too, our food supply, our whole future.

The UK government already has some legal targets for tackling climate change and nature loss (none of which it’s on track to meet, by the way). But it should also be thinking about how our need for food fits alongside these.

The big challenge facing us is, how do we make the most sensible use of the limited land and seas we have, in ways that nourish us, but without harming the nature and climate we all depend on? We can’t just shift the problem overseas by importing more of our food from other countries.

A Unique Solution

The good news is, we know what to do. We can stabilise the climate, protect and restore nature, and help our farmers produce plenty of healthy, affordable food without harming our environment. We know it’s possible to do all this, but not the way the UK government works at the moment. Right now, we’re failing on all three fronts.

That’s why WWF is urgently calling for a new law at Westminster– the Living Planet Act. It will mean the UK government has to take ‘joined-up’ action to stop the climate crisis, look after nature, and make sure everyone has better access to healthy, affordable food, now and in the future. Instead of treating nature, the climate and food as three completely separate or conflicting issues, they’d all be seen as important pieces of the same puzzle.

Progress

This year, more than 57,000 of you signed our petition to stop the destruction of nature. People from across the UK used their voices to prove that the public want urgent action from the UK government to tackle the climate and nature crisis. In September, WWF met with representatives from the major Westminster political parties to hand over the tens of thousands of petition signatures, sending a clear message to our leaders that we want them to act to stop the destruction of nature.

Now, we’re able to bring a proposal to the UK government that will provide them with a legal framework to do exactly that. Sign our petition for a Living Planet Act and help make sure that our government is taking ‘joined-up’ action to help restore nature, stabilise our climate and secure healthy, affordable food for everyone – now and in the future.
