In response to Imperial College London’s predictions that sustained levels of moderate warming could melt the East Antarctic ice sheet, Rod Downie, Polar Chief Adviser at WWF said:
“The East Antarctic Ice Sheet is Antarctica’s sleeping giant - it’s clear that our polluting habits are impacting some of the most remote and pristine wildernesses left on our planet. It is deeply worrying to know that we could wake the giant, with such dramatic impacts on Antarctica and on coastal communities around the world. Only deep and rapid cuts to our carbon emissions will limit this risk and the chaos it will otherwise bring to people and wildlife who depend on a stable climate.”
