Your Challenge
Try cutting down on the packaging in your daily life by taking a trip to your local refill shop (if there is one available near you). They are growing in popularity and can be a great way to reduce your packaging use.
Refill shops often sell a variety of items, from food and drink (including some oils and snacks, nuts, flour and sugar) to toiletries (including shampoo) and cleaning materials (such as soap and detergent).
- Save up some empty containers like jars, bottles and leftover takeaway Tupperware. Make sure they’re clean and free from any smell or traces of food or liquid. Take them to the refill shop and see what you can pick up.
- Simply weigh your container on your first visit to the shop, and make a note on the container, fill it with the item of your choosing and take it to the till. They will deduct the weight of your container, so you are only being charged for the contents.
Why you're doing this
Packaging waste is an environmental burden. Think about all the resources that go into producing the wrapper around your chocolate bar for example. Energy, water, labour time, transport, storage, refrigeration, the list goes on. All of this for something that is thrown straight in the bin. Not only that, once thrown away the environmental harm continues as litter, ocean pollution, or emissions if the packaging is burnt or sent to landfill.
How you'll make a difference
Every year, 2.5 million tonnes of plastic packaging waste is produced in the UK[1]. Zero waste and refill shops help to meet the UK government’s plan to eliminate all avoidable plastic waste by 2042.
Reducing packaging lessens the demand for raw materials to produce packaging that is used once before being thrown away or recycled. We can help reduce the environmental harm from resource depletion by removing packaging completely.
