Turn your engine off

Cut pollution by turning off an idling engine

Your Challenge

Many modern cars have stop-start technology built in, but if not you can still get into the habit of turning your engine off when stationary for periods of one minute or more. Consider turning of your engine when:

  • You’re stuck in stationary traffic;
  • Stopping to pick up a passenger;
  • Waiting at a railway crossing.

Why you're doing this

Transport accounts for 26% of the UK’s carbon footprint.[1] It also contributes significantly to our air pollution. In 2021, transport contributed 21% of emissions from nitrous oxides, and 26% of particulate matter (PM) emissions. These emissions contribute to air pollution, decreasing the air quality we rely on.

In the past, cutting your engine and starting the car back up was inefficient and would contribute to more emissions by burning extra fuel. However, modern cars are built with this in mind. According to research, if your car is going to be stopped for 10 seconds or longer, then switching off your engine is better for the planet, fuel consumption, air pollution, and your wallet.[2] However, if your car wasn’t built with stop-start technology, repetitively turning the engine on and off will cause wear to the parts. To balance this, some councils recommend turning off the engine if you’re going to be stopped for one minute or more.

How you'll make a difference

Switching off your engine when it’s safe to do so, will help to reduce the emissions from your vehicle and the unnecessary release of air pollutants improving air quality and slowing climate change. The bigger and less fuel efficient your vehicle, the bigger the impact will be from preventing emissions while idling. And if you want an extra reason to switch off, did you know you can be fined for idling outside a school? The RAC has a good summary of the law around idling your car, if you want to read more.[3]
