Your Challenge
Set your heating thermostat 1°C lower than usual for a week and see if you notice the difference. Turning down the thermostat means less energy is required to heat your home to higher temperatures. Heating is often the biggest source of energy consumption in our homes, and we can all do more to reduce energy consumption by turning the thermostat down slightly and putting on an extra layer of clothing. However, never jeopardise your health, especially in winter, by making your home too cold. Comfortable temperatures should be in the range of 18-21°C.
Why you're doing this
A lot of our energy still comes from burning coal, oil and gas which all contribute to global warming and climate change. When we waste energy, we’re unnecessarily releasing more greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere and worsening global warming.
How you'll make a difference
Cutting your central heating temperature by just 1°C will make a difference to your energy footprint, and you can save money too. If all households in the UK turned their heating down by 1°C, it’s estimated that we could save £1.4 billion a year. [1]
