Smart work

Can hybrid working work for you?

Your Challenge

The daily commute can be a big part of our carbon footprint. Understanding the impact of your daily commute can be complicated:

  • While traffic emissions fell during the Covid-19 lockdowns as people stayed at home, domestic energy use rose, as well as global resource consumption for things like cardboard and delivery vehicles.
  • Working from home using individual energy tariffs may be less efficient than having everyone in one office on a renewable tariff.

To understand the impact of your commute and find a green way to travel, you can check WWF's travel calculator: https://travelbetter.panda.org.

Here are some tips to get you started and find a solution that works for you:

  • If you live near your office, consider cycling or walking to make use of the energy and water in a shared office space.
  • If you have a long commute, consider public transport or car sharing.
  • Check to see if there is a local hub closer to your home to work from.
  • Ask your employer to try a hybrid working model - alternating between office and home working to cutdown on the activity that has the biggest impact in your working life.
  • Try changing your habits a couple of times a week to reduce your impact, such as taking the train (if you don’t usually take the train) twice a month instead of driving.

Why you're doing this

Burning fossil fuels emits greenhouse gases and pollutants which increase the risk of illness and death. The World Health Organisation estimates air pollution is responsible for seven million deaths a year worldwide.[1] During the Covid lockdowns there were reports around the globe of improvements in air quality and levels of pollutants due largely to the reduction in transport emissions.

How you'll make a difference

The transport sector is the largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in the UK. Having fewer cars on the road reduces emissions and fuel consumption.
