Your Challenge
This January, help the RSPB monitor bird populations by taking part in the Big Garden Birdwatch from 24-26 January 2025. You can find out more about how to take part and register on their website: https://www.rspb.org.uk/whats-happening/big-garden-birdwatch
Why you're doing this
Nature is in freefall – average monitored populations of wildlife across the world have reduced by 73%.[1] Between 1970 and 2013, 56% of species in the UK declined,[2] owing to agricultural intensification, plastics, pesticides, river damage and climate change. Native bird populations are falling in the UK. Monitoring populations helps track how UK nature is faring in the face of these challenges and which species need help.
How you'll make a difference
Birds are important for our ecosystems – they eat insects, slugs and worms, keeping pest populations down. And they help plants and shrubs disperse by eating their seeds. They are also an important food source for birds of prey, foxes and other mammals. You can support research on how bird species are doing in the UK by counting them for one hour in your garden and uploading your results to the RSPB’s website.[3]
