Your Challenge
The best thing to do with old items in good condition is to sell them or give them away, but sometimes we have items that aren’t in such good condition.
Maybe the holes in your wellies or a T-shirt mean they’re beyond repair. Or perhaps it’s an item no one needs now (such as a textbook that’s totally out of date). Instead of throwing them in the bin, you could try to upcycle them into something new. An old T-shirt could become a new bag; old wellies could be a planter; a pair of tights could become hairbands.
Upcycling is not only environmentally responsible, but also very fashionable right now. Check the internet before throwing something out to find examples of creative ideas for upcycling everything from picture frames to baby bouncers.
Why you're doing this
In 2021 the UK generated 27.7 million tonnes of waste and less than half of that was recycled (just 45%).[1] By reusing items and giving them a new home, you’re not just saving money but helping the planet too.
How you'll make a difference
Upcycling can be fun, give new life to old items, and benefit our planet by reducing resource consumption and emissions associated with waste.
