Flower power

Bring new species to your garden with a scatter of wildflower seeds

Your Challenge

Choose an area of your garden to scatter with wildflower seeds that are native to the UK (your local garden centre or even some supermarkets sell them in packets) – and watch your wildlife haven grow. If you don’t have a garden, you could use a planter or a grass verge.

Why you're doing this

In the coming decades, it’s estimated that 40% of all insect species are at risk of extinction, with bees among some of the most affected species.[1] One of the main drivers of the decline in populations of bees and other pollinators is habitat loss. Many pollinators rely on flowers (and other plants) for food, but since the 20th century we’ve been swapping wildflower meadows for grass, paving, tarmac, concrete and even fake grass. By planting wildflower seeds you’re bringing back some much-needed food to help our native pollinators.

How you'll make a difference

Wildflowers are just that – wild. So they will grow almost anywhere and look after themselves. This makes rewilding really simple and a fun family activity. Devoting an area of your garden to wildflowers helps native insects and pollinators by providing food – and when more of us plant wildflowers, insects have a smaller distance to travel to find food sources. Not only that, but the flowers look pretty too.
