Your Challenge
Lots of us like to take photos of birds, bugs and plants when we’re out and about, but did you know you can help science by taking photos? This is called citizen science – where everyday people help contribute data on species globally. Wherever you are in the world, you can submit your sightings to the iNaturalist app and help scientists monitor populations. The app also helps to identify what you’ve seen, and scientists around the world can help label and give more insight about that species.
If you want to take part as a group, you can set up a project on the desktop version, and run a ‘bioblitz’ where you get together as a big group and record all the species you find in one area. This can be fun with friends, schools or even workplaces!
Why you're doing this
By recording what you see, you show scientists which species are where, helping them to monitor populations. You also show them variations in species (such as colours changing based on where they are in the world), and how many are being seen.
How you'll make a difference
It also helps us, too, as the more we know about our natural world, the more we care about it – and that inspires change. By identifying the nature around you, you soon realise there’s a wide variety of different species right on your doorstep! And you can learn about the different species that live around the world.
