Your Challenge
This month, learn how to reduce your food waste by regrowing spring onions from scraps. Here’s how:
- Cut the stem down to about 3cms
- Put the roots in a jar / cup of water and they’ll start growing new roots.
- After a week you can then plant them in soil
- You’ll have fresh, nutritious onions in a few weeks.
- When the time comes to harvest them, try cutting them in the garden and leaving the roots in the soil. That way they will continuously grow!
Why you're doing this
Food production is responsible for 60% of nature loss on land [1]. By learning to make more out of our food waste we can help to reduce the global impacts of our food system and the impact from waste. Growing our own food also helps us feel connected to nature and helps us value food.
How you'll make a difference
You can try this tip with lots of different vegetables – from onions to pak choi, even carrots if you’re patient enough! It may be a small step but you’ll be helping the bigger picture by reducing food waste.
It is time to #FixTheFoodSystem. By doing this challenge you are also taking part in WWF-UK’s Eat4Change campaign to encourage sustainable diets and join the fight for our planet.
